One-year-old Onyx has already endured more than most dogs will face in a lifetime.
​
On May 22, Onyx underwent emergency surgery to remove an intestinal obstruction. During the procedure, surgeons were forced to remove approximately 12 inches of his jejunum, a critical portion of the small intestine. His family hoped the surgery would be the beginning of his recovery.
​
Unfortunately, just days later, everything changed.
​
On May 27, Onyx became lethargic, lost interest in food, and began leaking fluid from his surgical incision. His family rushed him back to the emergency hospital, where veterinarians discovered a life-threatening complication: septic peritonitis caused by leakage from multiple surgical sites within the intestine.

Onyx was immediately taken back into surgery. Veterinarians worked to remove contaminated fluid and debris from his abdomen, repair the leaking areas, and place two Jackson-Pratt (JP) drains to help remove fluid and infection during recovery.
​
Today, Onyx remains hospitalized in critical condition. While he has made it through surgery, his fight is far from over. He continues to require around-the-clock monitoring, intensive nursing care, medications, diagnostics, and specialized treatment as his medical team works tirelessly to give him the best chance at recovery.
​
The estimated cost of Onyx's hospitalization ranges from $23,974 to $28,717. The Ember Reign Foundation has approved a $2,500 Compassion Grant to help offset a portion of these expenses, but a significant financial burden remains.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 to help support Onyx's ongoing care and give his family one less thing to worry about while they focus on his recovery.
